Judicial Internship Program

CCYLA invites first and second-year law students from Baylor, Oklahoma University, SMU, Texas A & M, Texas Tech and the University of North Texas to apply for judicial internships with the Collin County County and District Court Judges in McKinney, Texas. Applicants must have completed first-year civil procedure and legal writing courses before June 2018. Courses in evidence and criminal procedure are helpful but not required.

The CCYLA Judicial Internship program affords interns the opportunity to work under judges in both the County and District Courts of Collin County. Interns will gain exposure to a wide array of legal matters including criminal, civil and family law. Some interns will be assigned to a particular judge while others will work with multiple judges. There is a mandatory orientation for all interns selected for the program. Regardless of which session you will participate in, there is one orientation, on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 from 11 am to 2 pm, at the Collin County Courthouse (lunch will be provided).

Participating judges and CCYLA will interview in February and early March and will make final selections in March. Internships are full-time and are unpaid; there will be two six-week sessions, from May 21 to June 22, 2018 and June 25 to August 3, 2018, although interns assigned to specific judges may have slightly different schedules, as determined by those judges and interns. No internship will begin prior to May 20 or end later than August 12, 2018.

Two to three judges plan to have two interns, each for one four-week internship, in their courts; three to four other judges will participate in the internship program by drawing from an intern pool of up to 3 students who will be available to all the judges on an as-needed basis.

Applicants should submit the following materials:

1. The completed Application Form, which includes, along with certain basic information, (a) the dates during the summer when the applicant is available, and (b) a short personal statement explaining the contributions the applicant hopes to make during the internship, as well as the experience the applicant hopes the internship will provide;
2. The applicant's one-page resume; and
3. The applicant's unofficial law school transcript.

All interns selected for either session must participate in the sole orientation program that will be on May 16, 2018, from 11 am to 2 pm. Attendance at the orientation program is mandatory – students may not serve as interns in either session if they do not attend this orientation (unless given permission from CCYLA).
